The BLHeli developers have released the new code and added the S to set it apart from the base code, the S represents something special. And will it actually make a difference to your multirotor flight performance? Read more to find out. Since the initial release of BLHeli, hardware has improved so the new code is designed to take advantage of the new hardware improvements with the most signification being hardware generated PWM which gives much better performance.

Because the hardware generated PWM signal is synchronized with the micro controller clock on the ESC, the motors run more silently and efficiently with less high pitch squeal.

Because your motors are getting updates much faster the control is much more precise and smoother response. This means that each ESC has alot more processing power to do more advanced stuff. This means that this combination of easier programming language and more processing power will make adding novel features abit easier. Once you are up in the air flying I could not tell any difference in performance. It is worth noting that I am not exactly the best FPV pilot you can just about manage the odd flip in a wide open area.

So perhaps more experienced racing pilots will be able to feel the improvements let me know. How to flash BLHeli ESC with BLHeli Configurator

When I received the ESCs, I was happy to find that both the 20a and 30a variants are pretty close to the form factor of the 20a Littlebee. This not only means they are drop in replacements for all my quads, but they also will fit on the arms with no overlap.

As expected, installation was a breeze. Next came programming. Passthrough works so absolutely no work was required. Just plug the quad in, set up the end points and motor direction, and go fly. You will notice the advantage of hardware PWM as soon as you arm your quadcopter for the first time. Eerily so. This is more or less what I expected, but it was a little bit disappointing. It is worth noting that the increased motor smoothness and throttle should allow you to increase your P gain a bit, adding improved precision to your flying, but that will require additional tuning and is not likely to make a huge difference in the average pilots flying.

Depends — probably not if you are looking for an upgrade. Check out our intermediate pilots article for some suggestions on that front. If you are building a new quad, though, I absolutely recommend these racer stars.

Most importantly I want to try and clear up some of the confusion beginners experience from such a wide selection. When I started in the hobby, connecting an ESC to a flight controller was pretty straight-forward. But now there is much more to consider: ESC settings, protocols, firmware etc.

All these options can be confusing and overwhelming for someone just starting out in this hobby. There is certainly a learning curve, I hope this guide can give you an helping hand through some of the difficult sections. Check out this guide about how to choose ESC for mini quad. The firmware that an ESC can use is dependent on the hardware.

Since then BLHeli has taken over the market due its more user-friendly interface and consistent development. As ESC technology continues to evolve, newer BLHeli firmware is being written specifically for the advances in hardware.

Anyway this should be clearly stated in the product description. You do however, need to make sure the firmware is up to date for bug fixes and improvement. These protocols are all analog signals similar to standard PWM, but much faster. These protocols are synced to the PID loop to reduce jitters, improve performance and reduce delay between stick inputs and the reaction of the craft.

Does anyone know? There is little to no information online. My issue is that the motors do not spin up the same and sometimes reset mid flight. Anyone experience a similar problem? Also, the trottle response is almost none, once I give it one click of throttle the motors spool up to full speed and do not register a drop in throttle from the controller.


Is this a software issue or a bad esc? I am willing to provide more information to anyone willing to help. The reason being is that my FC is a pixhawk 4 and it only takes analog input but the ESC I currently have uses digital input. Is there a way this can be accomplished? You will flash it with non S firmware.
